CNN Video on Egg Donation: What About the Doctors & Recipients?
Here is the link for a video segment that was run on December 23rd, 2008.
In my opinion, it was not a very balanced view of egg donation. There are not many things in this world we do for free so it seems silly to ask questions about whether they do it strictly for the money or if something else motivates them. I loved my job but I wouldn’t have gone there to work without getting paid. In this situation, both parties win – a women donates her eggs and gets paid for it and another women gets a chance to build her family.
Everyone has a line that they can’t or don’t want to cross. This is true in the egg donation world. It is like having an abortion or gastric bypass surgery – not for me but I am glad that those options are available for those who feel it is the only option for them. Many happy families are created through egg donation.
In these economic times there has been a rise of women wanting to donate eggs. I am wondering if the number of women who require donor eggs has increased or if they now just have more potential donors to choose from. In the world of infertility, only a small percentage of couples are suited to donor eggs as a solution to their situation. I am not sure that more women would choose to go down the donor egg road just because there were more donors to choose from. Something interesting to research for another blogpost.
Not a particularly informative piece. I suppose there is too much to cover in the three minutes most video journals get these days.

The CNN hype for this story was odd. Seemed like they really were trying to make more of the story than there is. AS you say, people do things for money they wouldn’t do for free, and then when times are tough they cast about for more things they might do. Donating eggs has far fewer moral implications than a few of the more traditional options I can think of for women seeking cash.

Oh, and PS, did you leave a comment (you can use your post or part of it) on the site you linked to? How about on the CNN website?
