Human Egg Donations Up in Tough Economic Times
I found this interesting article “Human Egg Donations Up in Tough Economic Times”. I remember going the emotional exercise of considering donor eggs and it is nice to know that there are now more donors available (one of the few upsides in our tough economic times). Sometimes there were not that many donors to choose from. I learnt something interesting – I was aware that the donors are very thoroughly screened but I had no idea of the actual numbers.
Donors can receive anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 for their eggs, but the process can take months to complete which means donating your eggs is a commitment that should go well beyond cash.
“It’s definitely not something to take lightly,” said egg donor Jessica Stubbs.
Stubbs, 23, made $3,000 after donating her eggs for the first time in January.
“The money definitely crosses your mind during the process, but it wasn’t an initial thought that this was something I could do for some extra cash,” said Stubbs.
Donors are screened extensively. Stubbs went through months of tests, shots and psychological evaluations before she was chosen.
“It’s definitely not as easy as what a male has to do,” she said.
In the end, she says, it wasn’t about the money, but the opportunity to give what so many can’t get themselves.
To give you some perspective on how intense the screening process is; out of 33 current applicants ready to donate at the Naples Clinic, the owner explained maybe eight will be chosen.
