Facing Infertility – The Power of Positive Thoughts
I am reading a very interesting book The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. In the chapter called “Emotional Energy: Transforming Threat into Challenge” they write about the power of positive and negative emotions.
A researcher David Snowdon made a discovery while studying a collection of nuns; all the nuns had to have written an essay when they joined the order. It was found that those nuns whose writing contained a large number of positive-emotion sentences (happiness, love, hope, gratitude and contentment) lived longer and had more productive lives. These findings changed his own life.
“I now make a conscious effort to regain my physiological balance quickly after an upset. I try not to stay stuck in negativity. My goal is to return my body it its normal, healthier state as soon as possible.”
Now I know this can be easier said than done especially when facing infertility and all it means to us. I used to think that I had to be sad or upset so that people around knew I cared about my challenges. I thought that if I was happy they would think that it was not as important to me.
It turns out that it doesn’t really matter what other people think. If your partner and those close to you know it is important to you, he or she won’t forget that just because you appear to be happy.
You are taking care of yourself when you are able to stay positive, being thankful for the people and the other stuff in your life (work, health, family, hobbies, etc). Biochemically speaking, your body reacts to how you feel. Positive emotions are healthier for your body and for your mind.
Keeping a gratitude journal or even just being mindful of the good things that have happened during the day help to remind us of all that is good around us whether or not we are facing a challenge, such as infertility.
Infertility can be a struggle and a life coach can offer non-judgmental support while you are processing information, taking action, and looking at your entire life and seeing that it is all in balance.
