Infertility – How Nutrition Makes a Difference
I recently read a great article entitled The Infertility Cure by Dr. Randine Lewis. It started with a great quotation which has really made me think about lots of things.
Those who take medicine and neglect their diet waste the skill of the physicians - Chinese proverb
Dr, Lewis says “women facing fertility challenges are often told that certain vitamins and dietary adjustments can restore hormonal functioning, reduce FSH levels, and ultimately help them get pregnant. Yet many women try to cut out processed meats, refined sugars, and dairy products for a few weeks or supplement their diets with large doses of vitamins and don’t notice a bit of difference.”
I am currently studying Holistic Nutrition and it is my thinking that it is best to consider our diet and bodies as a complete package and not try to make changes when an obstacle such as infertility presents itself. WIth all the talk about health care costs and what our health care should cover (another blog brewing in me), it is a great time to talk about a diet that we can live with, that supports our body for all its intended purposes. Is there a way we can eat that will keep us healthy and be easily adjusted when we do face a health obstacle?
Here are some suggestions in the article from Dr. Lewis:
- Eat alkaline rather than acid foods
- Get plenty of essential fatty acids, preferably from unprocessed plant sources and deep-sea fish
- Eat organic foods, local foods and hormone-free meats whenever possible
- Add more cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower to your diet
- Supplement your diet with a natural, high-potency multivitamin and mineral complex with iron, folic acid and B vitamins
- Eliminate caffeine, nicotine and alcohol
- If at all possible, avoid unnecessary medications and drugs, including over the counter preparations.
- Avoid junk food, excessive stress, too little sleep, too much exercise or anything taxing to the immune system
I am excited to learn about diets, health and wellness. Some of it is common sense but we all know the saying about common sense – “not so common!!.” Over the next couple of weeks I will be writing more about nutrition and cover some of the points that Dr. Lewis has mentioned.
